Broadchurch (2013 - )

Image
Back in 2013 everywhere people were talking about the who-dun-it that was Broadchurch starring  David Tennant  and  Olivia Colman .  Chris Chibnall  made a very interesting drama about the murder of a young boy that causes disarray in a close-knit community, as people's dirty secrets are thrown out into the open. It's not an unfamiliar element really, but there's a sort of charm to this. The characters are all interesting and you feel for Danny Latimer's family for their loss. Usually when the murderer's caught - these stories end, but Chibnall who'd already envisioned series two had it all planned out. spoilers past this Here finally series two has been released causing quite the turmoil on everyone yet again. This time, however, it seems the murderer has taken back their 'guilty' and converted it to a 'not guilty' leading to a trial. You'd think such a thing would be dull, but it isn't. It certainly helps when DI Alec Hardy...

Agent Carter (2015)

Image
love the hat Hayley Atwell   always seemed like a badass playing Peggy Carter who happened to be who Steve aka Captain America had a crush on. Not without reason of course, as shown when Agent Carter suddenly helms her own show by the same name. It's 1946 and Carter works with the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR) who are out to get Howard Stark. Most of his 'equipment' got stolen right from under his nose and suddenly people are using it, bad people of course. He's suddenly under fire and accused of treachery. Stark requests Carter to find out who did it, and she turns into a double-agent for his sake. Intrigue, spying, and of course - Carter keeping people at arms length. Usually the one who'd been leading this kind of show would - well be - James Bond. We've got the lost love, we've got the people advising her on opening up again, besides her trying to be the hero who works alone. One of the other notable leading characters is Edwin Jarvis, Stark...

The Usual Suspects (1995)

spoilers in the text I've been wanting to see this film for years, though I've never actually known what it's about. I remember when I was a kid and I saw an advert, I just desperately wanted to see it. It was my kind of movie at the time. We saw a lot of action films at home, and it was a staple of the nineties more or less. You had your Arnold and your Sylvester or your Snipes. I'm rather glad I saw this so late really, as I'd probably not have understood the proper brilliance of it this earlier.  It's all about five criminals who've been picked for a line-up after a truck filled with guns has been stolen. All of them claim they're not guilty, of course, and in the end because of their annoyance with the way they've been manhandled they decide to work together. Some of them grudgingly of course. However the film begins with the ending - a boat blowing up - and seemingly all of them are dead.  Despite myself, typical really, I figured ou...

Goodfellas (1990)

Always have a meal between murder You'd be surprised at the films I've put off throughout the years expecting them to disappoint due to the massive hype they've collected (boys going 'so cool'). It's no wonder that when it comes to Martin Scorsese I shouldn't really be afraid. This is that  film however. 'As far back as I could remember I've always wanted to be a gangster,' - a fantastic opening line, without a doubt really. It's a cheeky film about crime really, about 'good fellas', and it's quite different. Then again after seeing The Wolf of Wall Street  I get where the ad-libbing, the quick cutting, the voice over - come from really. Scorsese knows what he's doing in the newest  film of course, but this one has a certain added charm. Perhaps it's Joe Pesci or just the sort of honesty and credibility in it. It's not so slick - it's the nineties - the time where they let people really get dirty. I believe t...

Resolutions 2015

Image
They made them good in 1997 Yes, I am aware I was supposed to make this brilliant 'best Christmas films' list, which would obviously have the classic Die Hard on number one, but chocolate, work and family took place instead. Alas I was a good girl this Christmas. Anyway, I've decided for a really cool resolution this year - 'I'll only watch new films, and not re-watch films'* (*I am allowed to watch a film again if  it is with someone else). This resolution has opened up for Crime-January . I'm not only going to be watching who-dun-its of course, though L.A. Confidential certainly falls under that category with a sharp cast, brilliant sets and surprise twists. Bonus is Kevin Spacey, of course, who I crushed on around the time American Beauty came out (yes, I was a peculiar child, though I do still crush). The film is stylish and actually well-worth a watch, since I'm quite certain not many have watched it since. I've not heard so many mentions o...
